Days 1–3: Cultural Triangle
Begin around Sigiriya or Dambulla for ancient sites, village landscapes and a climb or heritage visit paced around the heat. Depending on interests, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura or a nearby wildlife experience can be added without treating the region as a checklist.
Days 4–5: Kandy and living culture
Move toward Kandy with a carefully chosen stop. The city can introduce living religious traditions, gardens, local food and the transition from dry-zone plains to the central hills.
Days 6–7: Tea country
Continue to Nuwara Eliya or Ella for cool landscapes, tea, walking and—subject to availability—a scenic rail segment. Two nights allow the region to feel like more than a photograph taken between transfers.
Days 8–9: Wildlife
Choose a national park based on route, season and current conditions. A safari works best with realistic expectations, a responsible operator and enough flexibility to enjoy the wider landscape as well as headline sightings.
Days 10–13: South coast and Galle
Finish with ocean time and a visit to Galle Fort, or choose the east coast when the season is stronger there. The final beach stay creates space to slow down before the journey home.
What should be changed?
Families may need fewer bases and shorter drives. Honeymooners may prefer boutique stays and more coast. Wildlife-focused travellers may add a second park. Travellers with limited mobility may replace climbs and adjust hotel locations. The route should change around the people—not the other way around.
